The charts below show the typical industrial/manufacturing use and whether they are electrically heated platens, oil heated platens, water heated platens or steam heated platens.  Platens are typically used for heating and cooling purposes, however the type of configuration is important.

If you have a hydraulic press that needs platens and are unsure of the type, please contact our sales department for assistance.

Electric Strip Platen (Type A)
Primarily used in the Rubber Molding Industry.

Heating: Electric Strip
Cooling: None
Temperature Range: 40 F to 400 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 48" x 96" with larger sizes available

Steam, Water, or Oil Platen (Type B)
(Baffles inserted from edge of platen with pipe plug closures. Heated with steam or cooled with water or oil, but not both)

Typically used in the rubber molding or plastic molding industries.

Heating: Steam, Water or Oil
Cooling: Water or Oil
Temperature Range: 40 F to 400 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 48" x 48" with larger sizes available

Electric Cartridge Platen (Type C)
(Research laboratory applications and smaller plastic laminating presses)

Smaller plastic laminating presses and rubber presses. Similar to Type B.

Heating: Electric Cartridges
Cooling: Water
Temperature Range: 40 F to 1600 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 48" x 96" with larger sizes available

Steam Platen (Type D)
(Welded baffle and welded closure construction)

Rubber molding and plastic molding in addition to board presses.

Heating: Electric Cartridges
Cooling: Water
Temperature Range: 40 F to 400 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 48" x 48" with larger sizes available

Steam, Water, or Oil Platen (Type D Edge Pin)
(Baffles inserted from edge of platen and welded in place. Closures welded)

Rubber molding and plastic molding industries along with the board industry.

Heating: Steam, Water, or Hot Oil
Cooling: Water cooled if desired
Temperature Range: 40 F to 400 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 48" x 48" with larger sizes available

Electric Cartridge Platen (Type E)
(electrically heated with cartridge or tubular heaters and protected terminal guards)

Laminate industry and particle board industry along with other high temperature molding applications.

Heating: Electric Cartridge
Cooling: None
Temperature Range: 200 F to 1600 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 72" x 672" with larger sizes available

Steam, Water, or Oil Platen (Type M)
(edge milled construction with welded insert closure plates, eliminating the need for baffles)

Laminate industry, particle board industry, and belting industry.

Heating: Steam, Water, or Oil
Cooling: Water cooled if desired
Temperature Range: 40 F to 700 F
Min. Size: 12" x 12"
Max. Size: 72" x 672" with larger sizes available
